The Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute is proud to be part of the DAISY Award program. The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem) Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day. The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after he died from complications of the auto-immune disease ITP in 1999. During his hospitalization, they deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown to Patrick and his entire family. When he died, they felt compelled to say “thank you” to nurses in a very public way.

Each month patients, families, and staff are encouraged to nominate nurses who provide direct patient care and have the following characteristics:
Does the nominee show passion about nursing and compassionate in the situation?
Does the nominee show empathy toward the individual or situation in the nomination?
Is there a sense of trust and/or teamwork in the nurse conveyed in the nomination?
Does the nominee show flexibility?
Does the nominee show love for the patients and the nursing profession?
Is there selflessness on the part of the nominee?

2017 Quarter 3 Winner
A patient on the psychiatric ward began to quickly escalate. Jeff immediately and calmly approached the man in attempts to calm him down. The client ran up into Jeff’s personal space screaming demeaning remarks, threatening to beat him up, and tear the unit apart. Jeff calmly began walking with the client, able to see beyond the hostility with sincere compassion. Jeff walked with the client and then got him to sit down and share – deescalating the client, maintaining everyone’s safety all while addressing the client’s needs. Jeff was exemplary in his ability to see beyond what the client presented to truly meet the client’s needs. That’s a gift and someone I want to keep working with.
