Dr. Tan is a Professor of Psychiatry and a founding faculty member of the Department of Psychiatry at Penn State Hershey and the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute. His areas of clinical expertise include hospital psychiatry, mood and anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders, sleep disorders, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), psychopharmacotherapy, cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), and family therapy.
He obtained his medical and psychiatric training from the University of Indonesia Faculty of Medicine, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Tan also completed a two-year post-doctoral research fellowship at the UCLA Brain Research Institute. His research interests include sleep disorders, eating disorders, gender issues, ECT, and gastric bypass surgery for morbid obesity. He has authored and co-authored 40 scientific papers on the above subjects. Dr. Tan has received numerous awards and honors, including Life Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, The Best Doctors in America (1996 through 2010), Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who’s Who in Education.
In his spare time Dr. Tan enjoys travel, reading, golf, and connecting with friends directly, as well as on Facebook. He is interested in spiritual matters and admires the Dalai Lama.
